Responsible data practices in smart farming
The Agrifood Code of Conduct for Data Use establishes a framework for responsible data management in agriculture, covering digital tools, smart machines, farms, and supply chain partners. Its goal is to promote data-driven agriculture and horticulture while fostering trust, transparency, and accountability in data usage. A public register of companies that adopt the Code will be available on the BO Akkerbouw website in early 2025. The Code is set to become the standard in arable farming and field-scale vegetable supply chains, with plans for expansion into other agricultural sectors. It defines roles for data users, data holders (those who collect and manage data), and data recipients (those who receive data from holders). The 2024 update aligns with new regulations, replacing outdated terminology and incorporating the European Data Act to enhance small business and consumer data rights. It ensures alignment with GDPR, the Data Act, and the AI Act, with legal regulations always taking precedence. The Netherlands is working with other sectors to make this Code a nationwide standard for agricultural data use.
We support this initiative and have applied to be part of the Code of Conduct, reinforcing our commitment to responsible data practices in smart farming.
